Reflection 

As a newer counselor the ability to think creatively while using critical thinking may take practice while honing my craft. It’s equally important to consistently engage in professional development while being open to different belief systems. The action of being curious is ongoing and humbling all at the same time. I am grateful that I am always willing to learn from others. As a counselor we can demonstrate the importance of curiosity in the classroom. I currently help studying career exploration which promotes curiosity and provides students with great practice in thinking outside the box.

As I reflect back in the 540 artifacts, I can clearly see that it requires a collection of data, which I understand, however I missed the most important piece which involved building relationships. The use of surveys, Likert scales can provide important key data points, however it’s the action of working with others that critical information can be learned. The use of peer reviewed and evidence-based material along with relationship building can be instrumental in positive changes.

  1. What are the key components of the research process that every counselor reading research should be aware of? Define these components and explain their significance.

 

The review and analysis of data should always be based on credible, peer-reviewed sources. As a research counselor, I must research literature to find credible information that aligns with my research topic. The collection and analysis of data while interpreting the research paper's narrative for possible biases and compatibility is critical. As a researcher, I need to have an outline or direction of how and what information I am collecting (Baimyrzaeva, M. (2018). As a researcher, I need to be aware of personal biases and those I may notice of other researchers while reviewing literature. It is not necessary to have a research topic in mind; however, one may develop a research topic during the research (Balkin,2022).

 

  1. What specific methods would you utilize in beginning your review of the literature within counseling research? Discuss the steps and rationale for conducting a review of the literature. Include specific examples related to the methods and steps for conducting a review of the counseling literature in your response.

 

I would begin my exploratory research to gain as much information as possible and attempt to narrow down the data and its importance. During this stage I am just exploring an unfamiliar topic for understanding and knowledge. The next stage would be more of a descriptive search, narrowing down of the reviewed literature for importance and relatability. The gathering of data on previous research and experiments helps identify the variables for reproduction of results (Vasuki, 2021). For example, if I was working with a client who experienced anxiety attacks when getting into a car and I had no previous experience in this area I would conduct research. I would first go to my credible search engine and began an exploratory search for knowledge and possible referrals in the subject.

 

  1. Watch the “Objectivity and Subjectivity in Social Research” video located in Topic 2 Resources. What are the issues of objectivity and subjectivity as they relate to methodological issues in conducting counseling research?

 

The objectivity and subjectivity in research may be different in methodologies due to synthesizing and placing people, places, and things into a perspective. The research process relies heavily on objectivity, which may conflict with our personal objectives; however, it doesn’t always equal a great research method. Through objectivity, we can gain knowledge on research and assess the validity of our understanding. When looking at subjectivity, it may take on a series of standpoints that differ from standard methodologies (oclc.org). While viewing the video, it really stood out that the best way to understand objectivity and subjectivity is to dive into a research project. The panelist did mention that the best way to learn research methods is to complete a research project.

 

  1. How would you define Evidence-Based Practice (EBP)? Discuss the inherent strengths and limitations of EBP in counseling practices.

 

Evidence-Based Practice has been measured with the results of individualized studies that rely on statistical testing to gauge its usefulness in helping the profession. Programs that are state or federally funded require programs to utilize EBP with trained facilitators (Chambless et al., 1998). The strengths of EBP can possibly be related to running the program with fidelity. When counselors don’t adhere to EBP, they run the risk of being out of compliance with funding and state review agencies. As a counselor, I like process therapy groups, which allow for more personal counseling styles. Oftentimes by using different modalities, we can reach clients on a more personal level.
