Reflection of counseling skills

My counseling skills have increased since my very first session recording in SCN 600 course. My current recording I felt anxious, however not as much as the last one. I knew what to expect, which gave me a sense of confidence. I have realized that speaking from the heart and not clinical terminology goes along ways with building rapport and flow of the session conversation. During my recent student session, I still felt like I was rushing, however I could slow it down and focus on the student. Over the last three years of my program practice and feedback have been essential in becoming an effective counselor. The slow building process of confidence and finding my own style is something I did not rush and took advice from supervisors and instructors for best outcomes. I have also adopted the Person-centered Approach (PCT) when working with students and families.

Community Culture Awareness and Resilience

I have been actively involved in my community since starting my counseling program which has increased my awareness of students’ needs. We started our school year with an ACES survey, then followed up with an anonymous questionnaire. The data collected needed support for underserved population with traumatic experiences. Ww actively engaged our community resources partners which provided supportive guest speakers and direct support services. During my practicums, our school has

experienced multiple crises that involved student deaths and hospitalizations. We opened up our school for direct family support services in which I shadowed and assisted therapist helping families navigate the grief process. I also currently call home and inform guardians of students who are currently on the D/F list and offer tutoring options within our school. This practice of calling home has helped me increase my confidence level in discussing the more difficulty conversations with families. Bringing in outside resources has already provided positive outcomes for our student population. We have created a partnership with our medical community clinic which is next to our school that provides medical support, therapy, tobacco cessation, and alcohol and drug treatment. In the beginning of my practicums, I was not comfortable talking to community members however overtime I networked and gained working friendships with resource partners.

ASCA and Professional Development

The ASCA Ethical Decision-Making Model provided me with guideline to work through situations for the correct directions and solutions. The ASCA templates also provided me with clear ideas and starting points for data collection, advisory councils, and best practices. My continued growth includes continued professional growth and keeping my other counseling licenses current in Oregon. My school district also requires professional development that occurs weekly with quarterly SMART goals review with administrators.

Continued Reflection and Supervision for Personal and Program Growth

I am going to continue working with my site supervisor for feedback and direction. I have district and school support which I can reach immediate for direction and solution-based practices. I have always utilized supervision over the years as an addiction counselor. Over the past three years I have seen the pattern of my learning and application of learned skills. At first, I experience a learning curve until I practice daily until it becomes routine. The use of ASCA’s Administrative conference template can also be a great start to creating a school counseling program that evolves over time with the needs of the students.
